Case study: Stadium ground protection
Protecting the pitch during the North Stand redevelopment at Aston Villa FC
The redevelopment of the North Stand at Aston Villa FC involved extensive construction work right next to the pitch. eps uk installed a double-layer ArmorDeck 3 turf protection system that allowed construction vehicles and mobile cranes with lifting capacities of up to 250 tonnes to operate safely on the playing surface, while protecting the natural turf throughout the roughly two-month construction phase.

Challenge and solution
The ongoing redevelopment and extension of the North Stand required extensive construction activity along the pitch.
A double-layer ArmorDeck 3 installation was used to carry crane loads of up to 250 t while reducing the pressure on the natural turf.
Heavy plant and construction vehicles, including 90 t, 150 t and 250 t mobile cranes, had to be moved across the playing surface.
A phased installation and removal was adapted to changing schedules and short-notice working windows.
Vehicle access was limited to a single entry and exit point of the stadium.
Coordinated access planning supported vehicle movements along the stadium's restricted access routes.
Working space was limited, with several contractors on site at the same time.
CAD-based layout planning supported the coordination of the different work areas and the requirements of all parties involved.
Results
- Playing surface protected throughout the roughly two-month construction works
- The double-layer ArmorDeck 3 system allowed mobile cranes of up to 250 t and other construction vehicles to operate safely
- The extended ground protection area helped keep the works around the stadium on schedule
